Hello,
Thanks for checking out the website for Air Resources Science & Policy! The course is a mixed undergraduate-graduate course in the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at UW-Madison.
Air Resources Science & Policy is a required course for the Air Resources Management certificate and should be of interest to a wide range of students interested in science, engineering, environmental studies, policy, or law. We focus on air issues, particularly emissions, climate change, and air pollution, but many of the concepts on science and policy are applicable to other areas. Energy use, in particular, is a key component of the course, as regulation of atmospheric emissions translates into management of broad scale energy consumption.
While background will be provided on the basic scientific and regulatory aspects of the air issues discussed, the course will focus on the role of quantitative information in the decision-making process. By examining this interface, the course should be of interest both to scientists interested in how research affects policy-making, and to social scientists interested in air issues.
Course work includes regular readings and in-class discussion, conceptual problem sets, and semester-long term paper development. A key objective of the course is to improve each students capacity to integrate quantitative and qualitative analysis. Thus, most problem sets require some calculations, and some subjective assessment. Similarly, the term paper requires students to incorporate figures and tables into their arguments. These activities in integrated analysis aim to develop the skill set underpinning successful interdisciplinary research.
Class size is limited to 25 students, and lectures/discussions will be held from 1:30 - 2:45 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Class location is the SAGE seminar room: 1710 University Ave., Room 272. It will be an exciting course! Hope to see you there. Feel free to email me directly at taholloway@wisc.edu
