Dr. Beattie has a Ph.D. in environmental planning from MIT. Prior to becoming Associate Director of the Nelson Institute's Certificate on Humans and the Global Environment (CHANGE) Dr. Beattie directed the undergraduate Environmental Studies Program at UMass Boston.

Dr. Beattie is one of the primary instructors in CHANGE and the Nelson Institute's Community Environmental Scholars Program - a program for undergraduate environmental studies students who want to link their passion for the environment with a dedication to community service. The classes he teaches help graduate and undergraduate students develop the interpersonal and professional communication skills needed to work in interdisciplinary teams on complex environmental problems. His research seeks to understand and promote the role of democratic decision making in science-intensive environmental policy controversies.
